Recent Activity Limited English Proficient students have very challenging and specific needs. Settling into life's rhythms in a sophisticated, technologically oriented society can be challenging in itself. Some of our children arrive directly from distressed areas of the world and may require some additional adjustment time before they are ready to devote their energies to their schoolwork.
Education in the U.S. is very highly developed. Learning teacher's expectations, citizenship responsibilities, basic facts about America's history and culture, are all a part of acquiring our language. Also, discovering ways to share one's home culture and language with curious classmates is an immediate and on-going focus of our English Learners Program.
It takes most people 3-5 years to acquire social English. School-specific (academic) language may take much longer, especially at the higher grades where the incidence of technical language increases greatly. Language growth is a personal matter; some people seem to move along faster than others. As students develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, they begin to participate more regularly in classroom activities, until eventually, they no longer require specific language instruction. Our goal as teachers of English as a New Language is to provide our students with the necessary tools and environment to successfully increase language acquisition.
